YOUTH SPORTS
Some of the best work comes from all the amazing Volunteer Coaches!
Youth sports at the Y are a success in large part because of all the volunteer coaches! Each team in each league is coached, often by a parent, on a volunteer basis. Each Youth Sports program has opportunities for volunteers to coach, assist and referee games. If you’re a parent of a child enrolling in a youth sport and would like to be a coach, please answer accordingly in the online enrollment form for your chosen sport. If you don't have a child in the sport, contact us for more information. Jon Reimer: jreimer@superiorymca.org OR Shawn Pagnucci: shawnp@superiorymca.org.
We have created a video introducing the importance of Character Development in all youth activities.
BASKETBALL was created by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts to offer a fun conditioning opportunity during cold winter months. It consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. ... After a while, the bottoms of the fruit baskets were removed.

FRIDAY NIGHT HOOPS at The Y is now three years old! Previously, this league existed at both UW-Superior and SHS. This is termed a "rec league" but the teams play great basketball and it is very fun to watch!
- All high school aged youth (grades 9-12) may participate UNLESS you are currently competing on a 9th grade, JV or Varsity team. This league is for youth that love the game of basketball, want to have fun with friends but are not competing on a school-sponsored team already.
- Unlike other youth sports programs, the Y does not create teams in this league. Instead, each team is formed by the players themselves.
- Teams may be comprised of all boys, all girls, or both. Up to 8 players per team.
- Play begins JANUARY 17
- League is capped to first EIGHT TEAMS that complete payment AND enrollment form.
- Games are officiated by Y-Staff
- Games begin at 6:30pm and 7:30pm
- Each game consists of two 20-minute halves

FRIDAY NIGHT HOOPS LEAGUE RULES
CURLING was invented in Scotland in the early 16th century. Stones were used on frozen lakes and ponds in the winter. This wonderful team sport has definitely made its way over to the USA and now we'd like to teach a whole new generation just how much fun can be had on ice without the need for skates!

SOCCER is played by over 265 million people! And since its nearly impossible to play soccer outdoors here in the winter, we've brought the sport into our gymnasium. We keep team sizes small to allow for maximum playing time and participation for all athletes. With the help of Y-USA, our staff have been trained to emphasize Character Development in all youth activities and the proof is on the court! Kids learn to be great teammates, classmates, and just so happen to pick up som strong soccer skills along the way!
